This glossary represents a consolidated collection of terms used in the bitumen industry. Not all of the terms listed below are used in this document, but are common expressions used in the bitumen supply chain.
What is gilsonite?
Gilsonite ore is mined in underground shafts and look like shiny black obsidian. Initially discovered in the 1860s, about twenty-five years later in the mid-80’s, Samuel H. Gilson promoted it as a varnish, electrical insulator, and waterproofing complex.
Different types of asphalt
